and had 43 foundation members by October 1980. Sessions began in Tuncurry in October 1980 and GLBC officially opened in February 1981. GLBC's Inaugural Congress was held a year later - and silent bidding pads were then introduced. By GLBC's 1983 Congress, its popularity had risen to 140 entries - some were denied due to lack of space! In May 1989, GLBC became part of the Australian Bridge Federation and introduced the “no smoking at the table” rule. By its 10th anniversary, GLBC had over $23,000 in investments and membership had risen to 132 players. By February 1998, when a record number of 78 players attended, new premises were urgently needed…

Work commenced on the new building in May 1999. The majority of the building and painting work was done by voluntary labour provided by members of both the Arts Society and the Bridge Club.  Mr Fred Marr (recently deceased) undertook the job to oversee and control the progress of the building, spending innumerable hours researching, designing, negotiating and supervising the work on the new building. His and other volunteers’ efforts are estimated to have saved GLBC over $150,000.
