COVID-related precautions

We are aware that some GLBC members who have played in our clubhouse over the last few days (from 9 July 2022) have tested positive to COVID-19. While not mandatory by current government regulations, we suggest players wear masks to protect themselves and others.

We wish those affected a speedy recovery, and thank everyone for their patience and understanding in these continuing trying times.

Club Pairs event 2022 - everyone's a winner!

Our annual 2-week Club Pairs event struck disaster this year. Although the first three rounds went without a hitch, the scheduled second day was postponed due to a local outbreak of COVID. Reconvened on Monday 11 July, unfortunately not all of the original pairs could make it.

Our wonderful tournament organiser, Sylvia did her best to manage with fewer numbers but to no avail. In the end, she declared all competing pairs the winners this year!

Vale Nigel Harman

With much sadness, we say farewell to Nigel Harman who passed away aged 85 years on 1 June 2022. He was a relatively new bridge player, catching the 'bridge bug' from our own GLBC lessons four years ago. His enthusiasm for the game saw him progress, attempting competitions and events that others at his level often find daunting.

Vale Beryl Appleby

It is with great sadness that we farewell Beryl Appleby who passed away on Thursday 21 April 2022. A GLBC founding member for over 35 years who loved her bridge, Beryl was respected by many of us and loved for her sense of humour. She will be missed.

Taree pipped at the post for the Bruce Hunter Trophy

After a two-year hiatus, Taree and Great Lakes Bridge clubs enjoyed a very pleasant afternoon of bridge in Forster last Friday 25 March 2022. Ostensibly, the Bruce Hunter Trophy bridge comp is an annual  'grudge match' between our two neighbouring clubs. In reality, however, it has always been a fun and (unsurprisingly) competitive contest - grudges are never 'on the cards'. This day was no exception, although was it this furious tussle that put the kink in the trophy?

Under 100 Master Points Competition - final results

Twelve pairs qualified to compete in our 2-week Restricted Pairs / under 100 Master points championship event during March 2022. Congratulations to the outright winners, Chris Begg and Anne Visser who won with a respectable total of 116.41. Also congratulations to second place-getters: Bill Goodwin and Doug Cable with 113.62; and third: Christine Dunn and John van Doorn with 113.04. Special mention goes to Marcia Neal and new member Maria Spaans who placed fourth overall.

NSW Country Teams event 2022 - Zone Final success for Great Lakes

After a gruelling weekend of bridge in Coffs Harbour, congratulations go to our two GLBC teams who did us proud. Special mention goes to the Erby team: Pauline Erby, Gil Clarke, Henry Hudson and Bronwyn Boehm who, after a qualifying round that went into the evening, placed 2nd in the final playoff the next day. They have now qualified to play in the final event in December (see below).
